I'm sure I'm being optimistic in the extreme but is the cruise control system for the square bodies as separate module that could be incorporated into the gen3 or is it just code in the ECU?

For my VW T4 it was just the buttons at 70€-ish.
I would guess there is an actuator for the throttle valve, an encoder for the throttle pedal, a clutch pedal switch and some sensors and wiring missing in the gen3.

Can't answer your question, but for a lot of other makes of car you can buy after marked cruise control, so maybe it available for the Gen3?
Personally I never use CC, I use the speed limiter on motorways and A roads. I find it gives you better control, as in being able to feather the throttle when the car in front can't maintain a speed.

They should of course adjust the speed of the car in front, not the car in the back...

I have allways said that the adaptive CC's are all the wrong way off.Personally I never use CC, I use the speed limiter on motorways and A roads. I find it gives you better control, as in being able to fether the throttle when the car in front can't maintain a speed.

In all newer cars, cruise control is simply a function of the ECU.I'm sure I'm being optimistic in the extreme but is the cruise control system for the square bodies as separate module that could be incorporated into the gen3 or is it just code in the ECU?

If by square body you mean a gen 4, you're out of luck - the gen 3 uses a mechanical linkage (cable) between the pedal & the throttle body, the gen 4 is drive-by-wire.

Somewhat related, some Japanese models of the Wagon R use the same steering wheel as 2014+ Jimnys, which include cruise control.
I've also seen some with flappy paddles on the back
