The five doors aren't made in Japan and weren't available in Japan until this year ...

Given the demand, you're unlikely to find one out of Japan any time soon, maybe try India, Australia or even the Caribbean.

I'd really like to know if quality matches Japanese production.

Personally, I haven't seen anything to make me think that it doesn't.

Thirty plus years ago, we had an auto dealership "start up" that imported & sold two Maruti models, the Gypsy and what was known in India as the Maruti 800, which the rest of the world knew as the Suzuki Alto or Fronte (SB308), at that time I was driving a Fronte, and I took a look at the Maruti 800 and under the hood, the difference in quality was readily apparent, rough alloy castings and so on.

My wife & I have a Japanese built three door JB74 & and the Indian built five door JC74 - visually there is little to suggest that the Indian build for the export market is a lower quality than it's Japanese built sibling, in fact, I'm tempted to suggest it may be the other way around - the manual transmission JB is way noisier than the automatic transmission JC and the odd thing about this is that the noise seems to originate with the transfer case, not the transmission - it is road speed related, regardless of gear - so far I have driven three different JBs, two manual, one auto, the manuals are noisier, and I've driven two JCs, one manual, one auto, and the manual transmission JC is quieter than a manual transmission JB.  I've added a layer of sound deadening butyl under the carpet in my wife's  JB, but don't feel this is necessary in my JC.

Paint thickness is another area of concern on the JB, but so far not the JC, maybe it's too soon to tell - the JC is just around eight months old.
