Yeah, the mechanic would remove the auto trans pipes from the bottom of the radiator and connect them to the machine.

Another reason for not replacing the oil (that I thought of whilst daydreaming instead of working today!) is the solenoids in the valve block. Working on automatic transmissions, everything has to be spotless. A human hair can affect the way a brake band or clutch engages.
When you drain the transmission fluid any dirt, bits of clutch or brake bands, water etc. collect in the solenoids. Which changes their resistance which in turn affects how far and how fast they move. This can affect the quality of the gearchanges. Look up 'YepThatsIt' on youtube to see how catastrophic that can be.

Like I said, if you dont absolutely have to, dont touch it!
