When I had a problem with dirt on a throttle body on another high mileage vehicle I used Halfords Electrical Contact Cleaner, it is very good at getting black deposits off things and it is only about £4 in the UK, it is a lot cheaper than the specialised products and works just as well.

These are both before shots, I cleaned all of the black deposits off.
As it doesn't leave a residue I even used it to clean my MAF sensor (it worked a treat), although since it isn't designed for this, use it at your own risk on MAF sensors.
In fact, I use it for most cleaning jobs (plug leads, coils, all contacts, getting rid of grime on tools), the can of WD-40 has been pushed to the back of the shelf.
