First two are free here, but because of "delivery delays", we got an "upgrade", so first four are free - we did 8500 kms (just around 5000 miles) in the first year, the second service was done Thursday last.

For some reason I can't figure out, the service schedule here appears to be different to what you guys have - we service at 6 months or 5000 kms, which ever comes first, you seem to be doing it every 12 months.

l suppose it depends on the mileage. There's no mention of a valve clearance check on the invoice, but it's only done 7,500 miles so it will probably get done next time.

Almost certainly. I was at 11000 miles for my 2nd and they advised waiting. Even at 17000 for my 3rd it was probably a bit too early!

Valve clearances are checked at 2 year or 25,000 mile intervals. The actual checking is reasonable but changing, it involves the removal of the camshaft and each defective cam follower, would be very time consuming. They wouldn't show it on the invoice as it is part of the service covered by labour. I have no idea, but I will check, what they do if the inspection reveals out of gauge clearances.

Adjusting the valve clearances certainly is fiddly but as Suzuki use the "penny washer" shims, on top of the valve bucket, only the individual camshaft caps have to be removed to fit the valve lift tool and not the whole cam which should make the job a little easier. Its the smaller shims which fit under the bucket, on top of the valve stems which are a pain and require cam removal with all the re-timing care it entails.

I have just rechecked the info. on the servicing manual and it refers to replacing the whole bucket tappet. There is no shim to be seen on the illustration.

Well, that's a surprise. I assumed that it was the same as the 1300 engine. Having to source and fit a whole, sized, cam bucket just to adjust a valve clearance sounds way too complicated. Possibly on a competition engine to remove any chance of a shim being displaced at insane rpm if air or hydraulic systems were not available perhaps, but not on a road car revving to 6500. Quite baffling !!
