Hey
anyone tried the IPF led headlamp bulbs available on JimnyStyle? Seem like a ( relatively ) inexpensive upgrade to the standard lighting on the Commercial. From the pics on the listing they look to be much brighter than stock but are they BS ( ? ) marked to keep them legal?
any info / comments appreciated

I believe LED headlamp bulbs are illegal for road use and should fail at MOT.

Complete headlamp units are legal, as long as they are Euro marked. The SZ5 has L.E.D. h/lamps as standard. Bulbs are a different matter and may, as pointed out by DJ20, be illegal for road use.

Thanks both, that’s what I thought. Strange that companies sell things with no reference to their legality.

You'll get an MOT fail with LED bulbs in a non-LED reflector. You need to either stick with halogen bulbs or replace the entire lamp units.

We fitted IPF bulbs in our Jimny Commercial and they are just superb! They’re a nice crisp white and just as good as our SZ5 leds, although I have to say we don’t have MOT on our island. There certainly doesn’t appear to be anything irregular about the light pattern and the Commercial also benefits from the head light beam adjuster. The lights were the first thing my wife commented on after she drove the jimny at night and said they were a nice crisp white and super bright!.....well chuffed!

The MOT here looks at the beam pattern, it needs to conform to certain standards to stop you dazzling the approaching vehicle .
Your headlamp bulbs have a specific focal point, the headlamp reflectors are designed to distribute this in the correct beam pattern. LED headlamps have reflectors designed to do the same for LEDs. That's why the wrong bulb / reflector will most likely be an MOT fail here in the UK.
Like many things it's not illegal to sell these "led replacement" upgrades, it's only illegal if you use them on a public road, and at the users risk.

As Scimike said, it is not illegal to sell them as long as you advise the buyer that they are for off road use only. Look in the small print, tucked away at the bottom somewhere.
