the JB23 comes with a functioning scoop for the intercooler, I've fitted one to mine.
I've no issue with anything getting in to it, however if you wanted to you could probably fit some mesh to it.
My plan was to fit an intercooler to mine, however I don't think there's enough clearance under the bonnet
