After my last test, I noticed there was an extra inch that it came out... and now I get all stations?!?!?!
Confused how an extra like 5% of the aerial made that much difference, but its working now at least. Installed the rear speakers so thought I would test again and yeah... all working.
I am surprised it made that much difference but antennas are tuned to a certain length for the frequency they are intended to receive. Maybe the whole system is a bit marginal and so it made all the difference. Mine needed full extension when I was running the factory head unit and antenna, and even then it was pretty poor.
The stock antenna is not powered, and your stereo should have no issue with it for FM stations.
I've never had an aerial apart - but could it be there is some kind of plastic/nylon insert to help the telescopic sections grip?
...Meaning that if it's not pulled up past that plastic insert there would be no metal/metal contact in all sections and therefore be much shorter than it should be - just an idea, But hell, if that's fixed it - happy days
Any corrosion on the aerial lead will cause poor reception. If you have a standard, factory fitted aerial the lead runs under the dash and connects to an extension lead. That in turn gives the aerial lead twice as many connections to corrode!
It is also worth remembering the aerial base should have a good earth connection. If thats corroded it will give the same symptoms.
Finally, if the live or earth is against the aerial lead it will affect reception strength. If your Jimny has an aftermarket head unit you may find an extension loom into the unit with block connectors, twisted, taped wires and everything jammed together.
