How about buying the smallest caravan you can find and using it as the trailer and somewhere to sleep on the trip?

Busta, That was an idea I had too, only funds weren't available at the time. Also, it can be sold at the point of arrival maybe for a small profit too.
Does anyone know of a small caravan for sale?

That's good to hear. Was your top box attached to the standard rails?
I'm tempted to take the long route round via Bulgaria and Hungary. But to be honest, I've only been in Crete for two months and am still in 'in a new place' mode. Plenty to explore here yet. So am probably going to go up Italy and across France, then back again.

Trouble is I'm having enough trouble finding a trailer, never mind a caravan. And I don't really want to take too long on this trip. There'll be other opportunities to go touring. ie whenever I want. For now, I just want to get the stuff out of storage and back here. Not to say I don't intend to enjoy the trip.... I will stop off here and there.
And the idea of a caravan just feels a bit too much. Also there are few if any caravans in Crete, whereas a trailer would be a cinch to sell.

From Crete to Italy is a long ferry ride and expensive maybe, But the ride through Italy and France would be a lot less troublesome than travelling through the Greece, Bulgaria Hungry route.
Yes, the top box was used on an ordinary Jimny roof rails.
Tony.

The ferry route is actually Crete to Piraeus (Athens), drive across Greece (takes about 4 hours apparently) and then ferry from Patra to Brindisi. It isn't cheap, but the other route is longer. I was just into the idea because Bulgaria is supposed to be very beautiful and, well, just for the trip.
