Actually, I checked with a current tester, and although it says clear as anything in the manual to switch on and check the presence & operation of any SRS MILs, and that the SRS MIL inoperative is a reason for rejection, the DVSA advice in the blog is pass if it doesn't come on at all/has black tape behind it/no bulb, as it cannot indicate a malfunction (and our MOT goes on what you can see, not what you can't, presumably not lighting means "not present")
So you are right, if it can't be fixed take the bulb out and it will be an advisory if the tester spots it :whistle:
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there
