I have never had a Jimny before and really don't know much about them, other than I do like their look and they appear a lot of fun. I would mainly be using it for playing off road, as well as a general runabout for my girlfriend. My girlfriend is Polish and we drive to Poland a few times a year, so I would like the option of taking the Jimny, therefore fuel consumption is important. In addition I really love diesel vehicles, never really had anything petrol. I currently drive a Ssangyoung Korando with the Merc engine and before I have owned Isuzu and Toyota Hilux pickups. So really want a diesel. If anyone could help me answer a few questions before I start looking seriously for a vehicle to import I would be really grateful.

1) I believe they use a Renault engine - was this specially adapted for the Jimny or is it a standard engine found in other vehicles? What are peoples opinion on the engine?

2) Do the diesel Jimny's differ on year?

3) What gearbox, transfer box and clutch does the diesel Jimny have? Is it the same as for the petrol one?

4) Anyone know if apart from the engine, does the diesel Jimny differ in any way to the petrol?

There's not a great deal of experience with the diesel Jimny on this forum because it's UK based and we don't have the diesel Jimny in the UK but I hope someone who has knowledge will help you soon.

The diesel Jimny was made from 2004 - 2011 by Santana motors in Spain. It uses the Renault K9K engine which is used in a wide range of Renault's and Nissan's. Power is 65-86 bhp depending on years. But +110 bhp is easily done by with a chiptuning.

As the Diesel Jimny is/was only available in mainland europe I think it's fairly safe to assume it uses same transferbox/shafts/axles as the petrol version of these years. Not sure about diff ratio.

But remember chipping a diesel for more power = more fuel consumed!

Many thanks for your replies. It's reassuring to know that you think the diesel Jimny uses most of the same parts as the standard petrol Jimny in the UK. That makes maintenance much easier. Just a couple of follow ups:

1) What's your opinion on the Renault K9K engine? Do you think it's a decent engine in terms of reliability? Does it have any know weaknesses?

2) I know you say the engine is found on a wide variety of Renault's and Nissan's, but I have been reading Wikipedia and they only mention the engine being used on the Phase 2 Clio (1994–96). Do you know which other vehicles had this engine and if the engine was ever produced for vehicles in the UK market?

3) You say they produced the diesel Jimny from 2004 - 2011. was this production run more or less the same, or did the vehicles differ on age? Ideally I would want to get one with less electronics as I like simple stuff - really hate electronics!

4) Any idea where you think the best place would be to get a diesel Jimny? Spain, Germany, Italy?

Isn't that pretty obvious?
