Big sheet of something = sail on roof... Travelling at 60mph with a sail on roof would be daft ... As part of my business we do outdoor stages and the health and safety involved is of course immense, building a lighting rig outdoor is ok, put a roof on it to keep the weather off means you have created a sail, quite easy for a couple of tons of trussing and lights to take off and we ballast with 8 tons to stop that happening on a small stage, had up to 30 tons once as wind was high... Obviously travelling at 60mph is the same as a 60mph wind, on most stages we would close the stage at that and tie it to a couple of trucks as well as 30 ton of ballast..
8'x4' sheet of ply, 60mph wind, calculations don't go that small but I'd guess at 2 ton of ballast... Jimny weighs less, lucky you just lost the roofrack.

You are not wrong. Even at 44 mph (70 kph) it was to much.

Overall I was very lucky and hopefully someone might see this and think twice about doing trying it.

I think there are just covers on how to get to the mounts.

Anyway here is a photo of the roof.

Whats that thing about resurrecting an old post? haha

I just had a similar problem yesterday.
I have a rola vortex basket on which I have mounted a 42" curved light bar probably weighs around 10kg...

just doing a bit of rough driving these mounts snapped away, luckily i was with another bloke in a single cab cruiser and he could put my basket in the back of the tray otherwise it would have been left there for a couple of days

so now im in the same boat as parrie and looking to make mounts out of more durable materials

just wondering if there is anything that has been made for people to buy to overcome this problem... or do I just need to fab something up myself?

cheers

I made these up. Pretty simple and a lot tougher than the originals.
