Electric vs manual transfer box differences

In terms of replacing one with the other, what are the differences between the newer and older Jimny transfer boxes?

Can the electric controlled boxes be converted to manual or is the casing/ shift mechanism completely different?

Can you easily install a 2005+ transfer box into an older jimny?

Any pictures would be appreciated.

as far as I know, the gearing is slightly different. Im sure it's been done and could be done again, but I am under the impression that, similar to VVT vs non VVT compatibility, electric and manual transfer is the same.

Could be wrong though.

The gearing is different.
The 2005+ manual boxes are higher in both ranges so not much good.
The newer auto box, however, has the same ratio in HI range as the older boxes, but LO range is 23% lower. This would be the main reason for changing, as well as the newer models having a stronger chain.

For those of us running near-standard tyre sizes and/or bigger engines, it would mean better LO range without affecting the cruising speed. (A rocklobster drops HI range by 10%)

An even better combination would be the HI range gears from a newer manual car, LO range from a newer automatic and the diffs from a newer manual. If possible, this would give near-stock HI range and 35% lower LO range!

Right bear with me on this guys............so if I fit a transfer box from a 2005 on jimny to my 2006 jim the HI range(standard 2 wheel drive and standard 4 wheel drive) will be the same but when in LO range it would give me a 23% reduction! which will help emensely if I fit bigger tyres ( was thinking of 235 75 15).

Mart, if your Jimny is a 2006 manual then you can do a straight swap with a 2005-on auto transfer case and get lower ratios in both HI and LO range.

I'm surprised nobody knows about converting the electric range shift to a gearstick?

Surely it would be easier to fit a 3 way switch on the dash?

so to fit an electrical t/c on my manual jimny 1998 would it be a streight swap no need to modify shafts etc ?

Possibly. Is it as simple as plugging in the switch though? I imagined there's some sort of ECU wizzardry involved.

Ive got a switch thats between my manual t box and hubs so I can have 2 low, just a basic switch.its more a question of how the electric t box changes gear?

Is it only electric t box's from an auto jimny that have the lower ratio low box?

Yes how they change gear, and how the shafts mate together.

Ideally I'd want a gear stick though as every vehicle I've driven with electric range shift has driven me mad! I can't imagine the Suzuki system is any better.

Electric tboxes are different and cannot be converted. Manual ones can be fitted to cars made with electric ones with a bit of wiring trickery to fool the electrics
