Terrible fuel consumption was created by pmarsh
Ok so I bought my jimny about a month ago and at the moment I am averaging 12.5l per 100km. I am trying to drive as nice as I can and still no improvement. I'm getting 300km off a tank! I can't justify driving such a slow car which is getting worse economy than my V8 was getting!
It's a 1999 hard top with 150,000km on the clock. It has a 40mm lift and 215/75/15 AT tyres. I know my economy shouldn't be great but 12.5l is just crazy in my opinion.
Surely this can't be normal? I have put a new air filter in and it has made no difference. Any one got any ideas on what the problem could be?
Cheers

My 2000 Jimny Fastback gets 7litres/100k's and has done so for 388,000 kilometres so you have some sort of problem. Check the simple things first, like blocked air filter, 4wd engaged, dodgy spark plugs etc. I've been using the 10% ethanol blend (from United Servos) for 13 years and my Jimny has always been happy with that fuel. Even low tyre pressure will affect your economy. I drive at 35psi on road, 22psi off road and 15psi in mud or sand.
Are there any weird noises like brakes dragging or is your clutch slipping?
Next, do the timing check (There is a plackard on the inside of the bonnet that explains how to cross two wires to do this test). Are your tappets correctly set?
If you have a snorkel, check if it has a wrinkle pipe connection in the guard as these can sometimes be compressed due to branch being forced up by tyre into the inner guard.
After these tests, check that all fluids are at correct levels in diffs, transmission etc as too much adds resistance and too little causes excess wear and drag.
One of my friends complained for years of poor economy. She had fitted a different knob to gearstick... one that only showed 4 forward gears :S and had never put it into 5th
Anyway, that is about all I can think of at the moment.

E10 fuel can give worse fuel economy. Auto doesn't help. Mine does ~12.5L per 100klm with a bunch of mods. you should be getting better than that. also things like roof baskets can worsen the economy. Good luck hope you sort it.

I have on my Jimny a 416 transfer box and 215/75/R15 BF Goodrich's KM2, consumption is around 10/11 l. - 100 km.
I have a suspision that you could have a 416 transfer box underneath maybe without knowing it or forgot to mensioned it! Then certainnely you will have a higher consumption.
What rev's you're doing when driving 120 km./h. into 5-th gear?
Is the Jim equiped with manual front wheel hubs, and did you already drove it in 4x4 ?
If you make a u-turn do you feel it needs lot's more power to do this manoevre?
If you have some Insa Turbo or other heavy threaded tires then this also can give some influence on fuel consumption.
Automatic could give a little bit more consumption also.
And as already mentioned take a good look at plug's, oil, etc..
Check the wheels when the car is lifted, are the wheels turning very easy, do you hear grinding noises?
So a lot of checkings to do...
