way out of my price bracket at the moment for starters and I dont really want to go down that route,more to just pull myself back out of trouble rather than winching myself through the obstacle.

That may be.
But a winch, even a small 6500 lb one is still a gazillion times better than any tirfor/handwinch thingy. So maybe you find it more clever to pull yourself backwards. It still takes forever, comparing to winching yourself through the mud.
Also, a winch can be for winching up steep hills and such.
And it should be possible to find a decent used winch cheap.

Yes I see. There is a thread somewhere where cheap handwinches are discussed and I wonder if it is all you need for your very occasional recovery.
I have one and find it really good.
I am not an off roader per se so I can't really comment as I don't know what troubles you get yourselves into but I am sure if I did even laning I would go down the fitted winch route.........I love gadgets......... but more I love doing things the lazy way. Don't forget lazy people find the easiest way of doing things.

speed of recovery isnt really an issue would rather take an hour to recover myself than have to call my old man out especially at night.
front mounted winch is abit to much for the amount of use it would get and involves to many other mods,I generally avoid situations where im going to get stuck if im on my own its more of a just in case idea.
