Sounds like what mine was doing. The father in law rebuilds starters & alternators for a living so I gave it to him. He found the one way clutch on the drive was knackered so he worked out what drive it is and ordered one from his supplier & fitted it, now it's like new!

I can't get you a clutch as if everyone did that he'd not have a job but if you wanted I could ask him for a price on a rebuild with a new clutch like he did with mine and could receive it and post it back when done. I warn you he's not necessarily quick though, so it could be a week and a half you'd be without it!

Or you could just get a good second hand one and not be without one.

Kirky - all I did was take the solonoid off clean the plunger thing and the plastic mecanism etc as I wasnt confident about taking the motor apart.

I definately couldnt be without my car that long as it doubles as my work van being self employed, I will get a second hand starter at some point but could still be interested in getting mine fixed so ive got a spare. Let me know a price buddy, no rush :)

I seem to remember hearing that the soft to spanish starters are different (shorter in length), is this the only difference? A shorter one would be easier to fit  is there any difference in quality tho?

How much is a second hand one likely to set me back?

Jonesy.

The soft tops have a different engine so they're a different starter. Have a look on eBay for starters from Camsuzuki for prices. They must have one. Just make sure it's for the same engine. They are a git to get out without a ramp as the bolts aren't visible and as you lay under it your arms aren't long enough. I just let him do it for easiness sake.
