Aussies call their Jimny a Sierra... and i believe have the handle bars on the correct side
Japs too sit on the correct side as far as i know

Get some pictures of your car on here, or private message me and i will sort them out
Pictures of badges could tell us something... including the VIN plate behind the battery

If its not an import... could it be someone who has repaired a write off and had it registered incorrectly?

Interestingly I checked the Norfolk dealers site listed in the link and he has another Jimny(jimney!!) for sale and it is described as a Jimny not the model described..
I'm not suggesting you bought it from him or where you got it from is doing anything illegal or even if it is the same car but as he had a similarly described car it might be worth a phone call to see if he can shed any light on the model description??
As has been said already we need pics/more details etc. any history, mot's,bills etc. Any sign of damage/repairs?? Anything with a foreign language sticker? or dealers sticker, service book?
If all this fails to identify it and it checks out as ok with the DVLA but they refuse to change the V5 I would approach VOSA and get an sva. You may end up with a Q plate but at least you'll know it's legal.

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

go to the blue bar at the head of the page and click on information then frequently asked questions . there is info on there about what the chassis numbers are and engine types etc. do you have the details of the seller and receipt etc ? there is always a chance the vehicle is a dodgy one. i am very mistrusting and at first glance this seems like a jimny on a sj identity . you need to get to the bottom of this

standard jimny - for now

There is something wrong here!!! Did you buy it from a dealer?? If so complain or get him to sort it out
If you bought it privately then unless you know the seller you might be stuck.
There is one other check you could try.
On the vehicle check on the DVLA site when you fill in the details it gives you the option of filling in the V5 numbers and it tells you when the V5 is issued. See if it matches your issue date.
It may be(without knowing the history) that in the distant past someone may have applied for a log book and quoted the wrong reg number??
What about the old MOT's They should match the car not the V5. Check all the numbers.
I've no doubt someone on the forum will help you post pics of all your vin plates etc.
If all else fails but the car appears to be legal as I said get it checked over by VOSA and you'll get a new number OR if all vin numbers are matching with the V5 you could fill in the changes section and keep your fingers crossed.
I converted a bike to diesel and all they wanted was an engineers report to confirm the changes.
I got my friendly local garage to confirm that what I had done was correct and they gave me a confirmation on headed paper to send off. It's only a visual check on numbers etc.
Change yours to convertible or the equivalent Jimny model and drop in Jimny as well.
Only do this if you are sure of the legality and all the numbers on your paperwork matches.
I know some people would just call it a Jimny convertible when applying for insurance but be careful
