Help I have a knocking!!

Hi everyone. For a while now I have had a slight knocking from the back end. Then today while lanning :woohoo: I had both front windows down so I heard it even louder. When I got home I had a look and I have found it attached is a photo of where my shock sits, when i push the car up and down the bottom of the shock tapps on the shock mount. It doesnt seem bad but Im just wondering whether over time it might become a problem. Has anyone else found this problem and is there a way of stopping it? The shocks are less than six mounths old so i cant see it being the bushes but what do you think? I also noticed something else which is nothing to do with this problem, well I guess its not any way. When I jack my back end up so the wheels are completely off the ground, I can wiggle the spring about slightly and just on one side, is this normal?? I have tried and even though it wiggles, it cant be wiggled enough to come out thank god :side: .

It sounds like there may have been enough play in there for the hole to wear and its now got enough room to knock? Although they're bushed iirc so same principle the bush must have worn, iirc i read somewhere of replacements.
As for the spring, i would say they're related. The slack in the bush is being taken up by the weight of the axle and freeing up just enough clearance for the spring to move?

Mmmm you could be right but even if the bush had worn surly there isnt enough room to make the spring slack. I just had a thought on the spring thing, When I fitted the springs, I seem to remember one being easier to fit, Im assuming it was that one!

Do you think this is dangerous or just something anoying?

Could it be a bit of Jimny lean if the loose spring is on the passenger side?

I would get the shock sorted asap. Anything loose will only get worse in my experience.

How about fitting polybushes, aren't they harder than rubber so less chance to wear.

Second that! I swapped my new pro-comp shock bushes over for my polybushes. Now I have rear caster corrected leading arms so don't use shock relocation brackets.

I did think maybe the poly bushes would be a good idea! how hard are they to get out?
One thing though, Im not sure that will make any difference as if you look at the photo, the shock is sooo close to the bracket, Im wondering whether new brackets might work as im thinking the hole might not be in the correct place. Again if you look at the photo, the hole is on a slight angle and also the holes are slighty larger than the bolt going through the shock :S also you will see the bracket has been bent in a bit too!

As regards to the spring, I just got off the phone to my local freindly gararge and they inform me,
I shouldnt worry too much about it and its not going to fall out! They say its due to using longer shocks for my lift. They also mensioned about the poly bushes but informed me that a few people have said it gives you a rough ride, did you find that Supergaz?

Checked all the radius arms bolt's? and bushes?

Also, where the spring sit's on the coil diff mount, make sure the end of the spring is about 10-15mm away from the raised lip of the coil mount.



If the tail of the coil is hard up against that lip, it tends to slip up the lip as you go around a corner, then once you get back on the power, it drops back of that lip which would also making a knocking noise.

And I think my coil is fairly close but this knocking is defaintly the bottom of the shock hitting the shock re locator. I laid under my jeep and lifted it as it was a wieght and i could hear the knocking every time! :evil: Its only quiet but its just anoying me and I dont want it to wear away at my shock bottom :pinch:

Did you use the right size metal sleeve to fit on to the bolt from the kit that you get with the shock.


This is the space l have on my stock with the Big Jimny shock mount,and l also use a rubber sleeve on the spring where the spring sits on the axle.

aahhhhh I have no idea I had trouble getting my brake hoses off so when I had this lift fitted, the garrage did it for me :whistle:
