Which gear's? was created by Monkey
Ok, i have a 2 sierra wide tack transfer case's here. One has 4.16 t-case gears fitted, but from what the previous owner told me, it is in need for a rebuild. The out put shaft has been crossed threaded, the gear's are the old style cut and welded (what ever that means?) and it make's some funny noises.
The second t-case is from a 1990 model wide track. The t-case is full of dirt etc...so it needs a rebuild. So my plan is, to run the 4.16 t-case until i rebuild my spare one, then on sell the case with the 4.16 gear's fitted (only paid $150 AUD for it and got the spare case for free).
But what gear's do i rebuild my spare t-case with?
Final high range reduction with each gear set with my current g-box/diff combo will be:
4.16:1= 22%
4.09:1=26%
5.14:=28%
6.4:1=27%
6.5:1=30%
(please note all rough figure's)
So which gear set is best for me? I think i would be doing close to 5000RPM@100kph with 31's and 6.5's, dose that sound right?
***Gearing i'm basing those number's of are: M13A VVT, non-vvt box and 4.09 diffs with a sierra wide track case with no gear's mean's around 10% reduction in high over standard right?***
So what gears are you guys' with m13a non-vvt jimny's running? tyre size and rpm at 100KPH?
Cheers,
Andrew

if I was clever enough to answer you I would
I'd just go for the 6.5:1 cos its the best for offroad and sod the road driving cos mine is a weekend toy

with 6.5:1 at 100km/h you will be pretty maxed in your RPM in top gear. in 2H id say but i dont know the calculations to tell you exactly. would need to know the gearbox ratio Tbox ratio and Dif ratio to give you an exact figure.

I have the 6:1 box, yes its great off road but very often I start off in 3rd or 4th gear low box ! If anything with 32" tyres its still slightly undergeared so really I suppose a 5:1 would suit my tyres. If you have smaller tyres stick with a 4:1.
I had a 4:1 with 215/80/15 mud terrains and the gearing was perfect.

What terrain are we talking about though funkyjimny?
I want to set the gear up to suit rock and steep hill climbs.
Easier question is, who has a non-vvt m13a, with 31's and 6.5's?

With 31'' and 4.16 t-case i have measured with gps and i got :
with 5th gear 100km with 3700rpm
110km with 4000rpm
in off road is very very good.
I was thinking of a 5.14 with the 31'' but i come up on 4.16 so i can drive more comfortable on road.

My cars set up for rock steps and very steep climbing, very rarely do i use first gear low box even then though. My first jimny had 215/85/15's and a Rob Storr 4:1 and was the best setup ive had yet really, If i had the chance to do mine again i'd get a 5:1 with my current tyre size which is 32", I dont want to go bigger than 32's as I'm more likely to break something and the tyres generally only come in wider sizes which is something I do not want.
