Hi Richard
looks like a great project B)

can't help wondering though, what you're going to do when this one's finished

wondering if it's worth Martin adding an Ex-Pats Topic on the forum where fallen Jimny truckers can stay in touch and post details of their projects

An expatriate (in abbreviated form, expat) is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of the person's upbringing or legal residence.

IMHO a 90 is the only choice for challenges - i presume you're heading that way. The mods available for them aimed squarely at competition is massive. Yes they have disadvantages weight, size etc...but all that can be insignificant when you consider the choice of suspension packages, tyre choice, body mods(tubular wings, proper tray back) availability of spares, simplicity of repairs "in the field". One overbearing factor in a landy's favour. You bust a half shaft and 5 bolts has it out - without removing the wheel, we all know the issues involved with the dear little jimny!
If the majority of the field are running Land Rover based vehicles and you bust something, someone will be able to help you out if you dont have one to had. If you're the only zuk or in a minority you will be lucky to get that.
I obviously love my zuk but sit firmly on the fence. I like how you can show up really sorted trucks in a near on standard jimny but for full on hardcore use i'd be leaning towards a 90 for the availability of tried and tested mods essentially.
Good luck with your new project. ;)

I mostly agree with this but if you have the engineering ability why not put Landrover or Landcruiser axles on a Jimny. Then you have the small size and light weight but the right track width and easy changability in the field of a LR, along with the suspension options.

Otherwise, yes, a 90 for all the above reasons and a trip to Mr Ashcroft, then Mr Rafferty (all X Eng range and Deltatec winch bits rather than Gigglepin) a few bowmotor 2's later and you're away. Just don't add it all up or show your wife the credit card bill!

I was thinking of doing a jimny build, but I don't have knowledge to be able to do a build like that, I can do thinks I put my mind to but I need something done for the end off the month. I would like to do a build like ainseigh on this forum but don't have knowledge of parts ect. But I may do something if I see a cheap jimny in the future then I will have experience from land rovers to then maybe build a jimny using land rover running gear. But for now I need to enter some challenges to get to no people and see what other people have built. I do love the jimnys but the LR under pinnings are higher and the tdi engine is great for power. See what happens this year. One thing I find with the land rovers is like you say size and weight.

 It'd had a hard life before hadn't it? Its a nice turn around, personally i prefer the front wings with exposed tube and in filled panels but its still a tidy truck. I'm sure its on the wish list but bigger rubber would suit it too.

I presume you've winches on the way too?
