If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

I'm afraid we need a bit more to go on.
The engine light tells you something is wrong, and the engine goes into a reduced power limp home mode.
When does the light come on?
If you want to know what is wrong, you will need to find someone who can plug into the diagnostic socket to read the fault codes.
I can guess for you and suggest that the crankshaft sensor is failing: this will put the light on after a few minutes driving on a motorway, longer in cold weather, and cause a missfire. Switching off and waiting a few minutes will put it back out and you can carry on for a while. A new one is required.
