I've been looking at tow bars recently and thought you had to have the detachable ones so that you don't obscure number plate when not towing. Not sure that one in the sale looks like one of them. Not sure I'm right :-)

Technically you are right and the firms should be fitting a swan neck removable type.
I've got a normal fixed one and even from bumper height or at a distance it can still be read clear enough, it only obscures the lower 1cm of a letter or so but the plate is still clearly legible. Mine was from towsure IIRC. I've never experienced any issue with it, even when i was stopped by the police. Thats not to say i wont but so far i've not.
Pics for you to see:

I took these for a similiar thread on difflock - dont mention it on there though as you'll get chapter and verse on the subject from a particular guy.

mcjimny and dirtydogz, which towbar is that you've got?

I just bought a towtrust one this morning on ebay and i'm hoping it's the same (or looks the same) as yours.

Just not all that keen on the swan-neck removable type.

Mines a towsure one originally from discount towing on ebay but i got it from a guy that had never fitted it for £80ish on ebay. It looks essentially the same as the diagram.

Those swan neck ones are seriously pricey and i have heard of them seizing on some vehicles if they aren't used much.
