No engine management light? wouldn't either the cat or the crank sensor throw up a warning lamp??

The later Jimnys (M13A) with the pre-cat and post-cat sensors should throw up an error when the cat is blocked, but it seems a bit random. Early (G13B) only have a pre-cat sensor so cannot see cat problems.

Equally, a lot of Crank/Cam sensor problems do not seem to be detected.

Should be the early engine (with a cam belt and ribbed tin rocker cover) then.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
