I throw away alot of L section 2' steel frames at work which hold equipment together (commercial brake testers) whilst being shipped from Denmark to our sites in the UK, these brake rollers weigh approx 2ton and are well welded and beefy just so the manufacturer can ship out alot of kit on 1 pallet. umm..... what could i do with these? skip them as usual? They are unpainted and not rusty either. I will save them next time I do an installation (probs not for ages now) put a picture up on here and put them up for grabs! I cannot weld either :( I've seen a few used for work bench legs.

Stick welding is generally better for thicker metal because if a stick weld looks "right" it has penetrated the metal and stuck it together. It is perfectly possible, and very common, for amateurs to produce a nice looking mig weld that has only stuck the surface of the metal, and have the weld fracture.

Plenty of info on the net from some good welding sites.

TIG welding is considered easier, and suitable for all applications, especially thin body panels, but we can't afford a TIG welder that works properly so we buy mig welders.

I can't stick weld for toffee, but I can gas weld properly, and stick metal together with a mig long enough for it to pass an MOT

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Thanks, ive read a bit about them and yes it does seem to be hard to tell if it just looks good or is infact a good "weld" with the migs.

Mig looks easier, probably not :-)

Arc is CHEAP

hmm.
