Read diff whine? Normal for Jimny? was created by Icymoist
Hi all, just got a new-to-me 2016 Jimny with the 4sp Auto with a shade under 17k miles and a FSH at Suzuki. I have noticed this whine that sounds like its coming from the rear of the car, but only when I'm on the throttle. It's most noticeable when accelerating but it's there very faintly when maintaining speed. If I completely lift off it seems to disappear. This is my first ever Jimny and my first ever 4x4 and its got me on edge. Is this sort of sound normal for the Jimny to make? Or should I be worried?!

I have read on this and other forums that a diff oil change can fix this issue, I am planning on doing one soon anyway but I'm just looking for some thoughts from veteran Jimny owners.

Thanks in advance.

Example video: pulling out of junction and accelerating and lifting off completely and back on and off again.

Welcome to the forum. My Spare Jimny is virtually identical in age and gearbox and milage and is just the same as your video. For a Jimny that is nice and quiet.

Just to Say Hi and welcome to the forum.

Its one for the Auto owners to answer as mine is a manual, so the gearbox / vehicle is going to sound different.

The Jimny in general (being a 4x4) has a mechanical "straight cut" gear sort of noise, more than you get with a road car. Lots of gears under the vehicle spinning, so you will get some transmission noise.

Mike

Yea, I'd say that sounds much the same as mine and mine's probably okay.

Try change the oil in them, it's very easy. Get a good 80w-90 GL5 oil and you'll need a 10mm square drive plug key. Make sure the filled opens before you drain it. Fill it until it overflows the filler hole.
