4WD-L not working was created by Wailin
Yes, it's not working and hasn't been working since I got my jimny. It's a 2002 with the gear lever selector. When I move the lever to 4WD-H the green light comes on and stays on, but moving the lever (stationary with clutch depressed) to low does not seem to work. No orange light comes on and no audible beep. I've done a lot of work on this jimny so not too bothered with getting my hands dirty but I really dont know where to start. Would be very grateful for any pointers folks.

4 L switch on the transfer box, could be just wiring but could be a switch fault too.

Cheers sniper. Have no idea where that switch is, is it easily accessible without removing the transfer box?

Have you seen this link?

www.bigjimny.com/mediawiki/index.php/4WD...ion_system_operation

The picture below is from the later models (with 4wd switches in cab) and the two switches on the transfer box are 30 4WD-H and 29 4WD-L my issues was with 4wd-h and it turned out to be a faulty switch 30. I was able to fault find mine by taking the wires off the switch and shorting them out when somebody else pressed the button which helped me confirm.

The trouble is they are circa £50 each, I think the BigJimny shop has them.

No need to remove the transfer box, switches are about £60 from memory and are available from the BigJimny shop.

Have you tried putting it in neutral as well as depressing the clutch. Mine will only work if I do.

People are getting mixed up.

Its an earlier lever based model. It has no choice whether it goes into 4wd Low or not. Move the lever to the low position = its in low. its entirely mechanical. Whether it INDICATES that this has happened depends on any switches and lights working. Some versions do not have all the lights anyway

Thanks Martin, I was thinking there was some confusion about the switch alright. So it might be working but just no visible indicator to show it's in Low? Is it a very noticeable difference as I don't seem to notice anything in the revs or power?

Yes, always in neutral and clutch depressed before moving to the low position.

In low range your top speed per gear is nominally half that of high range. It is very obvious.
