Have you tried putting it in neutral as well as depressing the clutch. Mine will only work if I do.

People are getting mixed up.
Its an earlier lever based model. It has no choice whether it goes into 4wd Low or not. Move the lever to the low position = its in low. its entirely mechanical. Whether it INDICATES that this has happened depends on any switches and lights working. Some versions do not have all the lights anyway

Thanks Martin, I was thinking there was some confusion about the switch alright. So it might be working but just no visible indicator to show it's in Low? Is it a very noticeable difference as I don't seem to notice anything in the revs or power?

Yes, always in neutral and clutch depressed before moving to the low position.

In low range your top speed per gear is nominally half that of high range. It is very obvious.
