Greasing prop shaft question was created by NineCherries
Whilst I'm sitting on my backside doing nothing (on holiday in the sun) my mind starts to relax and it wanders lol. I was under the Jimny before I left (repairing a slight blow on my exhaust) and I noticed a grease nipple on the prop shaft. I've never noticed it before and have therefor never used it.
What is its purpose, is it to lubricate the uv joint?
And Is it a case of pumping it full of grease till it oozes out somewhere or is there a specific volume that should be used?
And finally does someone know what the correct spec of grease that I should use?
It'll be on my to do list when I get home

Yes it is there for what you thought. If you off road the blue water repellant grease will be fine.

I plan to do a little off roading so it'll be looked at soon. What do you mean by blue grease? I've not used it before, where do you buy it?
Also is there more than one grease nipple then?
Thanks

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

It lubricates the splines on the sliding part of the front propshaft.
A couple of squirts into the nipple is more than enough.
It is the usual bad design. (Not sure how I could have improved it, apart from fitting the nipple half way along the splines, and fitting a rubber seal to the end that balloons out when full of grease)
If you pump away merrily you fill up the void between the inner shaft and the outside of the slidy part, then the shaft cannot compress shorter and it tries to push the transfer box off its mounts, or puts strain on the bearings when the axle goes up.
Lesser vehicles e.g. Landcruiser can be damaged by greasing that joint solid with grease.
