Also - noticed on front wheels has a little switch from 2 to 4 wheel drive on each side - do I need to switch these on too?
Any thoughts?

also your problem with the oil is your king pin bearings are gone and need replacing,
you need this
www.test.bigjimny.com/store/index.php?_a=product&product_id=6
and this is how you do it,

So it's not a problem and 4x4 is working fine and I can ignore the light?
So how should I change into 4x4 mode - do I just use the hub switches or the inside stick too?

normally its all controlled from the lever as the hubs are vaccum operated, but these are renound for failing and leaving you in a sticky situation, thats why people fit manual hubs as you can physically select the hub to be engaged and then you select 4wd inside to engage the drive in the transfer box

I personally couldnt handle staring at a flashing light everytime I use 4wd.
I think the main reason vacum hubs fail is the pipes perish, your pipes could be split and leaking anywhere along their length. I think its probably best to block them at the vacum tank in the wing.

it will keep flashing because you have manual hubs just take the bulb out
