Just to be clear, fordem and I were talking about EV fire risk specifically after a flood. A flooded IC vehicle is ruined; a flooded EV is ruined but also may experience a thermal runaway when/if the water (or the salt that remains after it dries) shorts the batteries.EV's do not catch fire more often than petrol cars.

It's not only a short circuit, Lithium is highly reactive with moisture and produces among other things, heat build up and hydrogen gas. If the heat build up rises the temperature high enough it will ignite the hydrogen gas and the battery will explode.
This is the principle reason why a EV battery is written off if it shows any sign of damage following an impact, you cannot know if water ingress has occurred and it is deemed to be unsafe. I would imagine that all of the EV batteries in cars under flood water are also written off as a precaution.

Not so much flooded cars here and all those new cars have good insurance and is scrapped anyways. But also I know of friends who had their roofs leak and water ingress in all the electronics in modern petrol cars as well like mercs and audis ending up as an insurance write off or a pain for the owner. Many of the expensive modern petrol cars have electronics in the floor where the water collects. So my point is still that modern is modern wether it is EV or petrol.
Some early Tesla models has more than 7000 battery cells and a simpler and more modern Nissan Leaf has 192 or 384 cells.
Very roughly you could say that the Tesla has 36/18 times more probabilty to catch fire in the way we fear as a thermal run out.
Modern EV's with less cells and lifepo4 battery tech is lesser at risk than the older Li-Ion batteries but still they will burn if failing badly.
Next gen batteries will improve and I still wait for those to come before buying an EV.
Had to google it: Found that in the first half of 2023, 305 cars caught fire in Norway and 15 of those where EV's.
There are no old EV's and no new petrol cars here so the statistics is all wrong but still..
I guess you could google translate it:

If you're addicted to the YouTube videos of idiots drowning their cars (and lorries) in floodwater, EVs have almost no problem ploughing through them. There was a Tesla submerged in one video but we didn't see it go in, so it could just have been parked up when the flood came.
You'd still get sewagey water in the carpet and in other places where it would smell for ever, but the fact that it's an EV doesn't give it any disadvantages in deep water. Quite the opposite.

I have said this before but I would have an ev as I am able to charge it overnight so in most cases that would afford it enough range even when I expect it tow a trailer a hundred miles in a day. However I have yet to find a ev with the same off road capability as either my jimny or shorty land cruiser. I have also yet to find one with the same modest dimensions as either of my cars. Then there's the robustness of either, yes they both sacrifice survivability to make them strong but that means both of them can tow way more than anything else in a similar size and cost, a 90 will set you back two jimny, class and towing is more important to me than safety, if it's your time, it's your time. So I then keep looking at side by side buggy options and they are heading in the right direction but again they are not there yet, you have to register them as a tractor and unless you have abs you can forget speed and even then you'll have to answer questions if you want to regularly go into town for whatever reason and even things like the xd1500 can't tow that much. It's not looking bright nor orange.

A friend got an VW ID4 GTX wich is a good car and has a large batery but towing even a small trailer ment we had to go charge half way on our relatively short trip. and towing capacity on the EV's in todays market is not enough for me with a horse box.
But in the near future the battery tech will improve making it an alternative.
Then it has to get old and used enough to make it into my price range.
I cant see me buying an EV in the near future.
