I saw that earlier on, and it's been discussed here before, some of us, me included, feel it's not a practical proposition.

Something else that I came across this morning, that is not Jimny specific, but EV related, and that needs to be taken into consideration by anyone developing or even owning an electric off roader - what are the chances of getting it wet.

I was looking at "hurricane prep" advice, and one such piece of advice is to park your EV outside and away from the garage, and to avoid driving it through floodwater.

Hurricanes might not be a problem in your corner of the world, I'm pretty certain the folks up in the BlueRidge mountains didn't think they need to worry, Hurricane Helene sure changed their minds.

Hurricanes are not usually a problem where I am, but I've driven through flood waters too many times to keep track of...

I still think it will be a while before we see another one and we certainly won't be seeing the 5 door. I think Suzuki dropped it as they and other manufactureres simply don't know what to build at the moment. Politics want them to build things that simply the public can't or don't want due to cost, resale values and infrastructure going foward. I've noticed in the past few months several manufacturers delaying their EV plans probably in the hope that a clearer direction for the future emerges and some are even still bringing out combustion engines. Aston have just released a V12 vanquish and at one point it looked like end for those engines but I think manufacturers are starting to turn their back to politics and will build cars they know people want and they can sell. Lets hope others follow this approach and we get the Jimny back.

Land cruiser mini comes with a 400hp engine

Can't see this being viable in the UK

Land Rover have just released the Defender "Octa" with a sodding great V8 producing more power than the vehicle will ever need.
And take-up has been very good, with a waiting list already.

So there's definitely a market.

I don't follow these car roumors in the press so much, but I have the impression they do not hit the spot all the time.
it is difficult to predict stuff and, especially the future.

Here it was predicted that old petrol and diesel cars would loose their value but now some are worth their weight in diesel. I sold a Pajero yesterday for the local red cross. 8500€ for a 2005 Pajero 7 seater with the slow 2.5 116hp diesel engine. And that was a reasonable price sold to another red cross group.

If you look at all of the articles about an EV Jimny, they seem to trace back to that ad about EV cars with the silouettes, one of which looks like a Jimny. I guess we have to wait until Suzuki announce the EV Jimny for sale.

Changing track, if you are a car manufacturer with a line making petrol/diesel engine cars and a large supply chain, why wouldn't you make as many as you can before the ban, especially if there is demand for them, I know I would.

The cost of EV is not coming down, if anything it's going up and the EU's 30% tarrif isn't going to help either.

My missus has casually mentioned she would like a new Qashqai, I looked up the price, starting at £30k and going up to £42k for different trim levels with the e-power models about £2k more than the ordinary drive and all of these are only a mild hybrid. £30k+ for a kumquat, that is serious money.

I saw an article last week about EV, it said that the average price was £49k and sales were 55% down on the previous year, I am not surprised.

Perhaps if the Jimny does come back as an EV, it will be so expensive no one will buy them, or perhaps this is why it isn't coming back.

The silhouettes picture was a fake I am afraid

The basic need article was a press release from Suzuki which spoke in general terms.

A reporter in a magazine thought it was boring as it was text only so jazzed up the report with photoshopped silhouettes of the current Suzuki range

Suzuki was furious because of the conclusions everyone jumped to and issued a notice to dealers telling them the pictures were fake.

The Jimny has long been a niche product -- a modest-selling model for a smaller manufacturer.  Add the fact that Suzuki apparently does not regard the UK, Europe, or the US as key markets for its four-wheeled products, and it would not be surprising if we never saw another IC Jimny in the North Atlantic area again.

As fordem says, the weaknesses of EVs in extreme situations are becoming clearer now that those vehicles are exposed to things like floods.  (The thermal runaway -- ie great flippin' fire -- when the batteries get shorted is impressive to see.)  EV makers will improve their product over time, but IC still has advantages not only in robustness but also in cost.  So in most of the world, petrol and diesel will still have a solid place, for reasons of practicality.

But back to the Jimny.  To me, that is a car which offers a unique combination of throwback drivetrain and construction, small packaging, and top build quality.  If you take out any one of those pieces, it is not really a Jimny anymore, no matter what the nameplate says.

And I think it is inevitable that the Jimny as described will disappear, because Jimny drivers are disappearing.  Most people today have no idea how the systems in their cars work, even at a basic level, and no interest in learning.  Partly that is because cars now are so reliable, but also it is because people just prefer to spend their time elsewhere.  In most wealthier countries, the "gearhead kid" just is not a thing anymore.  So the appeal of a dead-simple ladder frame / chain transfer case / lever-action 4wd car just speaks to a smaller and smaller demographic.

I would slightly disagree with this as when the Gen 4 came out it bought a lot of new People into Jimny ownership who never owned one before. From the meets we do I gather most Gen 4 owners have never owned a Jimny before and that old school style of car is what appealed to them. I think a lot of people aren't too keen on the tech of newer cars which is why some early 2000 cars are quickly shooting up in the ranks on their way to becoming classics. I watched a video recently of a company refitting a 2007 Range Rover sport by upgrading it to modern tech and the comments slated it saying to keep it original as that is the appeal of buying a car of its time.

I get that the general consensus of an EV is all these troubles but, here where half of every car is an EV, we do not see them stranded without power more often than petrol cars have an empty tank.
EV's do not catch fire more often than petrol cars. Older cars are more often involved in fires here and the older cars here are petrol cars. And older petrol cars break down more often too than EV's.
This is not based on any statistic material but my general impression of my own observations. And of course half of my friends and colleagues have EV's so it is based on what I hear of their experience also.

There is now no good real SUV EV alternative with a proper 4x4 system like the Jimny but there are many modern EV's with 4x4 here and they work just as fine as the modern petrol SUV's with modern electronic gearboxes and diffs for road use.
We do have cold weather here and EV's work just fine in winter too.

As i never buy a new car and have no need for a modern car I have not bought a new EV like most other Norwegians. If i had the need for a car to drive a long distance to work i would of course buy an EV as they work just fine, run way cheaper, and is way cheaper new than a new petrol car here.
I do not have the guts to buy a modern car anyways with all the electronics in it weather EV or petrol without a factory warranty.

The new Jimny is very appealing to me but impossible to buy here as there are none available. Even though it would be a good investment with very little depreciation if well kept.
