Transfer box intermittent fault was created by cmiff
Hi all
Just bought a 2015 Suzuki Jimny automatic and when driving it i think it's the transfer box trying to engage intermittently. When driving a grinding noise starts but if i press the 4wd button it goes away and then just press the 2wd to go back. Can anyone help with this

The usual fault with the transfer boxes (not that any fault is really common) is a skipping chain, normally provoked by a rapid start from rest. As I understand it, In 2WD the box is still driving the front axle but the hubs are unlocked, so no power is going to the wheels. So switching between 2WD and 4WD shouldn't do anything except add load to the box. 4WD-L, on the other hand, does move things in the transfer box.

Hi
The noise is coming from the gearbox area and sounds like gears grinding but still drives ok. Just sounds like something is trying to engage and the only way to stop it is to switch to 4wd and back or stop and restart the car.

The transfer box is double isolated from the front end so switching it is less likely to be the box but it isn't impossible for the front vacuum hubs to attempt to engage the stationary drive shafts and switching between 2 and 4 will reset them. The hubs would be the first port of call.

+1 on hub's. you could remove both hubs and still drive to see if the noise is still there

A leaky vacuum solenoid can cause the hubs to slowly engage. They can easily be stripped and cleaned.
The transfer case doesn't drive the front axle when in 2wd, so the spinning hub is trying to engage with a stationary shaft which is what causes the noise.
