For sure going for practical rather than asthetic. Thanks for the advice and I'll set the bumper idea aside for now.
I'm based in Glasgow and planning to book some training up near Perth.
Before the training though I'll get on to ordering and installing the fwd/rear recovery points. From what I see its quite the neccessary first modification.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Something very few people consider when equipping their Jimnys is the weight.
I've never weighed one empty but the handbook says 1060kg kerb weight for a manual- that will be without the driver.
The plated maximum is only 1420kg, so you only have 360kg to play with.
4 people, a loaded roofrack, bigger tyres, steel bumpers, rock sliders, diff guards, towbar, winch etc. will have it overloaded on road, if you are thinking of using it as a daily driver.
An auto is supposed to be 1105kg, so it can only carry 315kg- 4 big lads will have it over weight!
Best to stick with what you really need, like recovery points and dual purpose tyres.

Just came across this weight calculator from Aus, which has data for a Jimny, could come in handy for those adding mods.

Crikey!
A front mounted winch is out, unless the passenger sits in the back!
I checked in the Willys MB manual, and surprisingly, the payload of a 1940s MB is 800lb/361kg, virtually the same as a jimny.
Yet the MB was supposed to carry 5 soldiers all kitted out for war. Good job the DVSA didn't exist!
Back then people were smaller than Hobbits though, as you'll know if you've ever tried to squeeze into any WWII armoured vehicles or aircraft- I couldn't even get into the driver's seat of the JU 52 at Cosford years ago, and I wore trousers 2 sizes smaller back then.
