Just out of interest, does that rule only apply to vehicles built or registered after 2007? Would it be ok to shoe horn an ARB bumper onto a pre 2007 regardless of the year it happened?

It only applies to post 2007 vehicles.

Car Manufacturers were prevent from putting bars etc. on as accessories for a number of years now, but aftermarket suppliers were allowed to continue to stop killing their businesses overnight. But from 2007 cars onwards nothing is allowed to be fitted that stops the manufacturers frontal safety from working unless the itm is approved in itself.

However, as with most of the UK laws, they cannot be applied retrospectively therefore you can fit them to pre-2007 cars.

Having said that, I thought I heard that ARB had got the Toyota bumpers approved.

It's a law that will have a massive effect on the UK offroading scene in years to come, which I thought when I first read of the legislation.

Just think, if the only winch bumper you could buy was from a massive company like ARB who have the financial ability to do the research and development into creating bumpers that comply, they would cost a pretty penny - well ARB's do already!

This will mean that people's offroaders will be just that offroaders and nothing more as they won;t be allowed on the road. So you would have to have a trailor and a tow vehicle just to enjoy the hobby.

How many people can afford that outlay - not something you would pay out as a beginner.

Another nail in the future coffin of offroading in this country - but hopefully not in my lifetime!!!

I might rustproof my Jimny a bit more having thought about that again.

Thought thats how it worked. i'm still aiming for the holy grail find at the scrappys - a jimny bull bar that goes round the foggys too.

For my sins - i do read a few of the green oval mags   and vaguley remember something about if the bar forms part of a safety feature on a winch or something then its ok, i.e the electric board L:whistle:    y's used to have big capston winches that needed a big bar around them as a safety feature and that this was allowed due to H+S - it made me very, very mad:angry: when i discovered that jimny bars were as rare as hen teeth and places never have them

But hey hoy - enough of this talk about bars - im off to the scrappy again this weekend to see if my dream comes true and nestled at the back of the scrappy is a jimny with a lift kit, snorkel and bullbar or even better an ARB bumper that the scrappy man is only happy for me to have for magic beans, as he cant get rid of it!!:silly:
