Main Beam fault was created by funkyjimny
I'm having problems with my main beam, ive changed the switches and checked the bulbs, still doesnt work - everything else works fine, just main beam. Even the little warning light on the dash to say you have main beam on... but i dont...
Can someone show me a photo with a big arrow pointing to the Main beam relay please - i only ask as Ive been ill of late and struggle to read complex or large manuals ! Dont suppose anyone has one spare do they? doubt it if i dont ...

Cheers

Gary,

I have just looked at the cicuit diagrams and I think this needs a bit of thought.

1. There is no headlamp relay shown in the diagrams I have (what model is yours?)

2. The headlamps are positive wired. Therefore a positive feed is sent to the headlamps and the switch simply grounds the circuit.

3. Left and Right hand headlamps are fed separately from different fuses. Fuse 7 (or 59 depending on version) feed the Right hand headlamp. Fuse 6 (or 60) feed the Left Hand Headlamp).

4. If Dip is working but main is not then the fuses and positive wiring to the bulbs are fine as it is shared.

5. The Dashboard lamp for Main Beam is fed from the Left Hand Headlamp. So a fault in this circuit will affect the Dashlamp and the Headlamp.

6. Both Main Bean and Dip then use the SAME earth on the switch, so if DIP is working then the Earth is ok.

7. The only element unique to Main Beam are the switch contacts in the stalk and the wiring leading to the stalk from the bulbs.

8. The DIP wiring is RED/WHITE whilst the MAIN wiring is RED

9. The "FLASH" or PASS function on the switch uses a different set of contacts, can you flash people?

Hope this helps

Thanks Martin, Dip is fine as is side, and also the dash lamp. Fuses are fine for both sides. Ive fitted another set of switches with no joy. Bulbs both ring out too. I cant 'flash' people either.... I'll try and ring out some wiring between the switch and the bulbs.Suprised theres no realy though....?

If the Dash lamp for main bean works and Dip beam works then there is only one common point that I can see between the Left Hand Main Beam and Right Hand Main Beam that is NOT common to the dip and dash lamp circuit. That is a connector called E75/G31 (Petrol) or E23/G04 (Diesel). This connector brings together the Left Hand and Right Hand wiring before it joins the Dash Lamp Wiring.

This connector appears to be just up under the dashboard by your right hand knee, somewhere above the speaker kick panel. This could be a clue as it looks to be a very kickable position.
