Annoying Chuffing Noise

Well i went back to the dealers in Edinburgh today where i bought my S/J for the periodic "Chuffing Sound" (see my previous post, engine noise)i was worried incase it was the head gasket,the mechanic checked the temperature of the antifreeze which was ok the oil was fine,he said the engine sounded ok,we then went for a run yep you guessed it sods law no chuffing, i said scratching my head i heard it on the journey here a few times,we then went to visit a friend of the salesman who has his own car tuning buisness who also owns a S/J and has done for a number of years,he jumped in and went for another run, again no chuffing,he told me to visit him again in the next few days which was good of him,i am going back to the dealers on saturday to have a new thermostat fitted,the salesman told me about this before i bought the J/S so this was pre arranged,and they are going to have a drive about fingers crossed it starts chuffing i wont hold my breath,i then started my journey home, 1/2 a mile up the road thar she blows the chuffing flipin chuffings back,i am definatley not imagining it as my wife heard it a couple of days ago.

Sounds like your's is doing it way more than mine. It only does it pulling away from a near or total stop and can never get it to do it twice, it sounds more like transmission on mine than engine though. Hope you get it fixed !

Just a suggestion but if your model has the timing chain as opposed to the belt. If the chain is stretched it could cause this noise when the engine is under load. I had a Mitsubushi Delica and they were know for it.

erm....my car chuffed today.... as i pulled away it was like a little....well fart...and i wasnt able to recreate it again. it was as i was driving out the stealership having just had two rear shocks and wheel bearings fixed...under used car warranty let me know how u get on with the chuffing incase this is something i need to look out for too...whilst warranty is still valid... Andy

im sorry, i really cant help your situation but i feel i must say how funny i find the fact that the noise is "chuffing"

it made me laugh when i heard it - but i think had i not read this thread first i may not have paid as much attention to it. all the same, car drives fine and engine is as smooth as a whistle so im not particularly worried
