It is the lack of a centre diff or viscous coupling acting as a diff that does it!

ok so in a Jimny you bascially have RWD car and when you get stuck, you then use 4x4?

Personally, No, I use 4x4 when I think conditions are bad enough it will be needed.
If im about to ford a river / climb a bank etc, I select 4x4 and then perform the manouver.
similarly if im driving on the road and I feel it is sufficiently bad, I will use 4x4.
Dont get hung up on potential damage you can do to the system ... just use common sence.
when we had snow last year, I went out in 4x4, but actually de-selected it as the conditions were not as bad as i first thought ... however if they were as bad as I had first percieved, then I would have had no problems in keeping it in 4x4

easy to demonstrate ... put it into 4WD, reverse, and turn the wheel to the extreme lock as you go backwards ... the vehicle will grind to a halt ... the transmission is now locked solid DONOT TRY TO GO FURTHER BACK.
if the wheels cannot skid themselves around, then this is what happens ... to unlock, just drive forward in the same direction you have just come from and the transmission will unwind itself. Then remove the hevicle from 4x4.
if you were to try to go back further, then things would potentially break....
Simples

It gets a bit "dodgy" when in 2wd on the ice i agree, just 30 mins ago was driving out of a car park and it just flung sideways on some black ice, it was patchy but id kinda like to have been able to have it in 4wd so it was a bit more stable.
Oh, so are the mitsubishi pinin with there super deluxe top of the shop selectionee 4wd any good for offroad?
