Thanks yeah I think you're onto something there. The MOT history shows it has barely done more than a few hundred miles for the past few years.
I think I'll walk away from this one. It'll be our main car and I can't afford thousands in repairs on top of 10k.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

It wants a lot of work stripping back the failing undercoating, treating the rust and recoating, but the major concern is the mould.
It has been sat with damp inside, and generally Jimnys don't leak,
My last car had a persistent water leak that I just couldn't cure and so I got rid. I certainly wouldn't buy one that looks like it might have a leak! Any sign of damp inside the cabin or boot and I'm off, never mind mould!
Another tell is that some cars have steel staples in the carpets that will rust if the carpets have been wet for a while.
You are right to leave it.

Thanks again or the help here. Just bought a 2012 Jimny auto from Costswold Jimnys. Plenty to choose from! Really nice condition, especially the interior.
Despite having 100k miles, the chassis/suspension and underside looks pretty clean and apparently will be further treated before I collect it. I'm not worried about the mileage as I can keep up the regular maintenance.
Excited to put plenty more miles on!
