2012 Jimny - is this too much rust?

Hi there,

We've been hunting for a 3rd gen Jimny for a while and went to see one today. UK 2012 1.3 model with about 55k on. On the face of it it looked fairly tidy inside and out and starts/runs well.

I know rust is something to look out for and keep on top of but I realised after seeing it I've no idea how much rust is expected for the age/mileage.

Here's some photos. Is this fairly expected and treatable at this stage or should I avoid it?

Many thanks

I just checked the MOT history and there's mentions 'very corroded but not excessively' on a number of parts for the past few years.

Also, this car is around £10k (auto transmission) but again, not sure how normal this level of rust is on this sort of age/price Jimny.

I'd say that is about average for an untreated one and is eminently saveable assuming you are willing to either get dirty or pay someoneto do it for you. That said I'd also want to look underneath the boot lining and around and under the headlights as these are the notorious areas.

Thanks for the reply.

Good to hear, I can replace parts and am relatively handy mechanically but can't weld so that would be beyond my abilities.

Given it's £10k for the car, are we talking hundreds or thousands to get it into decent shape? Happy to do the work but also only have limited funds beyond the price of the car.

Here's some more photos I took of the engine bay. I think that's mould on the headliner.

Not sure I would call that tidy inside & out. I'm guessing for that much mould to be in the roof lining that its been sat around for a bit as surely that is a bit of a health hazard to be driving that around daily. Even our beaten up 2003 offroader jimny doesn't have a mouldy headlining. That would put me off more than the Rust! The rust is difficult to say as some pictures I would say it looks about average and others where its near to the body mounts would concern me. It certainly is at a point where it needs someone to give the car some love and financial input to save it otherwise its gone. Have you got anyone you know that could do the bits that you wouldn't be able to do such as welding? If you could get their opinion and a cost needed to fix the car then that will give you more of an idea of whether its a good buy or not. The trouble with MOT history is a very corroded but not excessively from previous years can suddenly jump up to corroded within the body mounts and then you have a car that is off the road needing ££££ spending on it.
