Manual locking hubs? was created by benjo225
Folks, I am once again in need of some wisdom ๐
Thought I had snapped a CV end of last week however upon removal of the manual locking hubs, i discovered what can only be described as a bloody mess with what appeared to be material from the locking hub scattered around. It appears a washer/bearing or similar in the hub has failed and as a result, led to me very nearly getting stuck a few days ago ๐
Has anyone had this happen before? Presumably it's easier to replace rather than rebuild the locking hub?
Cheersย

Before the question is asked, I thought one had snapped due to a grinding/clunking noise from the n/s/f which was rotational... it's still possibly going to be a CV which took the hub with it. Neither fronts were turning, figured it was the typical cv noise until I pulled it off

Depends on which ones you have but the black actuator and the none branded ones use sintered metal components where the red actuator ones are machined and therfore quite a bit stronger. I killed my first set through lack of lubrication/abuse. My second set see a bit more maintenance and mechanical sympathy as I don't really need the strongest ones for farm work if I remember to be a little bit gentle. This is for AVM hubs in haven't used asin ones.

One of the reasons I haven't changed to manual hubs is my offroading experience with them on the Gen2 (SJ).
I would not consider any others than the Aisin ones but as they have not been made for the Jimny and, they will not switch on by themselves before I get stuck, I just havent yet.
Edit. But Billet ones would be the a clear better alternative.
