Holes in water pump was created by mlines
Both the old water pump and the new water pump have holes top and bottom right over the top of the shaft and rear on the bearing. Almost looks like a lubrication point? 

If they are a lubrication point it would explain why the old one failed :) :)

I allways thought they were holes to show you when it is broken. if water come out there you need a new one.
havent all pumps holes like that?

Port to show if bearing is failing, as water will come out, well thats the principle.

They're known as "weep holes", water will leak out of them if the seal fails.

Back in the days of BMC & the A-series motors, we would disassemble the pumps and replace the seals & bearings.
