Gen4 coil springs on Gen3 was created by MattHE
Hi All.
Quick question - I fitted a nearly new set of Gen4 springs on my Gen3. My car now sits better and rides better. When doing the swap over I noticed the Gen4 springs have fewer turns in the coil of each spring, and they do seem to compress a little more quickly than the old Gen3's. Is that my imagination or simple physics and to be expected? I regularly carry loads in the back or in a roof box, so maybe I would have been better fitting new Gen3 spings?
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers,
MattHE

As long as you have good condition dampers to go with the spring refresh then you will be ok as the gen3 has always been relatively over damped. If however the dampers are older high mileage they may allow more rapid body movement which can take a bit to get used to. As long as you keep the roof load to the specified 30kg and remember to accommodate it in your driving decisions it shouldn't too much affect.

Fewer turns means a stiffer spring. More turns make a spring softer. I have gen4 springs on my gen 3 which carries tools and does loads of towing. I feel like they support heavy loads better than the original springs did. The gen 4 shocks are definitely worse than gen 3, though.

Thanks Lambert and Busta for your replies. I changed all round to the low mileage Gen4 shocks that came with the springs, so it's interesting what you say Busta. I'll look into an alternative set. I did try a spare set of Rough Country's on the rear but the ride was much too harsh for me. Any recommendations for a road biased damper?
I've probably been over the 30kg roof box limit once or twice (cough cough), but no adverse affects, and no rally driving. I'll remember for the future though...
Cheers guys.

I've previously had Monroe dampers and they were good without being harsh. Bilsteins seem to be the optimum choice, I'll be getting a set when funds allow.
