What's leaking!?! was created by SjTheJam
Hi all, my poor Jimny decided to start leaking this morning. Typical as she's about to be taxed and insured for another year.
Before I ring the garage and say the jimny is leaking, can someone please give me rough or definitive idea of what's broken. Probably my wallet by the end of this conversation.
Shes an 02 plate if that makes any difference.

Looks like the king pin bearings have gone along with the axil oil seal. A relatively easy job to undertake and plenty of guides on line to show you how.

As Bryn says, kingpin bearings and driveshaft oil seal. Typically the lower kingpin bearing gets wet and rusts. The Jimny swivel assembly is a poor design and, even in perfect condition, does not prevent the ingress of water. The rusty bearing causes movement in the whole swivel assembly which in turn causes the driveshaft to push sideways against the driveshaft seal, making a gap for differential oil to flow through, into the swivel and then leak out past the swivel dust seal.

The critical parts needed for repair are a pair of 30302 taper roller bearings and a driveshaft seal. The bearings can be found for less than £10 each (you don't need to worry about getting expensive ones as it's rust that causes them to fail and the expensive ones rust just as quickly as the cheap ones). Genuine driveshaft seals (strongly recommended) are usually available on eBay for less than £10 each, although you might have to buy a pair. So in principle it's an inexpensive repair.

Beware of repair kits that offer a vast assortment of parts for inflated prices. It's very unlikely to need more than the parts I mention above, but if you do they can be bought individually. For example it is very very unlikely that you will need to replace the kingpins themselves but kits are being sold with them included and it multiplies the cost drastically.

Labour time is about 1hr for a good mechanic who isn't familiar with the job, although it can be done quicker with experience.

I coat the new bearings with graphite grease as it is highly waterproof, resistant to washing out and its lubricating properties persist almost indefinitely on any bit of metal you put it on.

Make sure whoever does the job does not pack the whole cavity of the swivel with grease. Although tempting, this is completely unnecessary and leads to premature leakage, more mess and makes future repairs a misery.

I agree that the bearings would most likely rust before they ware out but still I would not buy anything but well known brands of bearings. Fag, skf, ntn, koyo, and similar. They still only cost like 20 to 30 £ And some intended for this or original like the ones in Martins shop here has a rubber ring that help keep grease in them.

Having had bad experience with chinesium bearings and having to redo time consuming Jobs I have promised myself not to waste money on too cheap solutions.
I still do that though :)

I have not seen a 30302 bearing with a rubber seal. Martin appears to be supplying regular, unsealed Koyo 30302 bearings with a non-genuine driveshaft seal. His parts are competitively priced though so definitely a good option.
