Rumbling from my right front wheel says bearing is on its way out. Still no play in it but I guess only one of the two runs have worn out.
Special lock nut tool will arrive on monday but I am leaving for a trip before that.

Do these bearings fail loud and fast or more controlled? Hoping to get 2500km out of it still so I can get home.

Nevermind, special ring nut tool arrived today inspite of parcel tracking saying Monday.
Now hoping for a speedy and no problems bearing swap.

Went in pretty easy. Put the bearing in a freezer first. Was planning on heating the hub too, but Could not find a torch. Just 2-3 tons on the press so no big force.
And the rumble is gone.

Correction : rumble is still there.

At speed doing right turns it rumbles. Doing left turns is silent.
I changed the right front wheel bearing, found the inner race had some play in it

Something Else? Other bearing?

It could have been the other side all along, or it might be the back...

I changed the rear wheel bearings and then the diff on mine chasing a rumbling back axle. Absolutely definitely 100% the back axle. I even got one of those professional "mek-a-niks" to sit in the back and confirm it was the diff- although he did say "I'd just leave it until it gets really loud, could take years".
Eventually a front wheel bearing collapsed and I had to keep pumping the brakes. Changed it and all the noise had gone...

Another time  I had a loud clicking when turning left. Drove in circles for ages trying to find it. No play, nothing caught in the disc backplates, no sound with the wheel jacked up.  It was a nail in the tread....

I can't remember if the bearing has a split inner race- if it does there will be play when the hub nut is loose, torquing up the hub nut closes the gap and pre-loads the bearings.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

This suggests a bearing on the left side of the vehicle - it takes me back about thirty years or so, we would rock the steering side~side gently, and the weight transfer would help you determine which wheel bearing was rumbling, now I just do both sides at the same time.
