Engine turns over, won't fire, then dumps fuel @ rear right when turned off? was created by alexjelley
Hi, total mechanical noob and first time posting, so Hi first of all
I picked up a 2013 Jimny on Monday, and it broke down last night. The engine turned over, sputtered a bit then stalled. I turned it over again but engine not firing. Then, when I turned the key back for another go, about a cup of fuel leaked out at the rear right of the car. Tried again, same thing. There is no fuel leaking other than immediately after a turn-over.
The fuel tank is full & the car was hot (sat in the sun), so not sure if an expansion problem, fuel pump, pipes or whatever. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Sounds like you have overfilled the tank by carrying on after the pump cut off- maybe even rocking the car to get more in?
If you do this and don't immediately drive 30 miles or so to use up a gallon of fuel, when the fuel expands it comes out along the breather line and fills up the evap filter under the bonnet.
As soon as the engine starts it tries to draw air through the fuel cap, along the breather line and through the evap filter to purge it of fumes.
It draws neat fuel instead, runs massively rich and missfires- it can even stall.
Open the filler cap and syphon out any fuel that is in the spout (you can't get a syphon tube into the tank.)
I'd remove the evap filter (the black plastic tank under the bonnet on the driver's side) and pour out any liquid fuel. leave the pipe from the tank disconnected until the engine is running and up to temperature.
If you've left it a couple of hours for the fuel to dry out of the cylinders, it ought to start. Then run it long enough to use a gallon or so of fuel and make space in the top of the tank.

Thanks - that is good to know for future reference because I am guilty of overfilling, but sadly that is not the case here. Good news is that the recovery guy came out & found a split in the fuel pipe near the tank - fingers crossed, so should be a fairly simple fix. She's with the local Suzuki garage for repair and a more thorough health check. I'm a bit worried about what they find, hoping that she doesn't need a full replacement of all the fuel pipes for example, but I was pleased with the general condition when she was on the flatbed & I could see underneath properly. Fingers crossed she's a good'un!
