I that the pulley rubber is failing and when the belt for the alternator is connected its enough to pull it out of alignment to just catch on the engine casing as it rotates. I will report back as I progress.

One more question. Is the bolt on the pulley a standard "Righty tighty Lefty loosey " ?

I had mine changed towards the end of last year as a precaution, and since I was having a new radiator so it was easy to access. The one that came off didn't look great, with a lot of long cracks in the rubber. Idle feels smoother, but there's no difference at higher revs.
As it's an auto, the mechanic said it was easy to undo the bolt by removing a cover on the transmission and locking it there.
