What affordable roof bars for 3gen Jimny ? was created by Sirjamesrusty
Hello - I'm looking at adding a set of roof bars to the standard rails that run either side of a 3gen Jimny in the fantasy that I can then get a lightweight roof tent fixed up for the summer.
I'm just wondering where to start with bars which would then support said tent.
The tents seem to be getting lighter and I'll only be going from Tyneside to Northumberland I reckon at a stretch Yorkshire to use them.
Any advice as always helpful 👍

I had a pair I bought from Amazon or eBay, they were quite good, but I didn’t use them much and never with anything heavy and sold them when my Gen 3 went.
I couldn’t bring myself to buy Thule bars, not when the roof rails have such a low rating (30 kg).

Couple of issues here. Firstly the standard roof bars are very weak, so other than for very light loads there is little point adding cross bars to them. Most people buy or make steel roof racks that bolt directly to the roof with the factory rails removed.
Secondly the maximum roof load, regardless of what rack or bars you use, is 30kg. As far as I know there is no roof tent available that weighs less than this. Obviously the roof is strong enough to carry lots more, but if you were to exceed the limit, be involved in an accident and had fingers pointed at the heavy little tent on the roof you could end up in a serious amount of bother.
Personally I prefer a tent that goes in the boot and can be pitched well away from places cars go.

There does seem to be an increasing number of jimny with roof tents on the road but as said above that doesn't mean they are safe or within the limits imposed on roof loading. It's also worth noting that however simple it may be to use a roof tent you have to break camp every time you need to use your car to go do something, it looks cool but it's not without compromise.

I had some bars called Pro Rack that fit in between the original rails. They where lower rated than the thule but as there is no point in loading the roof too much anyways on a lifted jimny they where fine for me.
There are tents now that weigh less and they are coming down to an acceptabel weight for a Jimny if fitted to the roof with a light weight mounting.
I have the roof rack from jimnybits made from aluminium and a light weight awning. no tent.
my roof load combined is about 30kg. I would not go above that. Now with a lifted but not yet widend car it is just fine.
With a Jimny for trips you will have to choose between an awning or a tent on the roof because of the weight and then there is no point (for me) to buy a tent
I have travelled alot together with friends with tents, some like them some not. but most that buy cheap will buy again but something better.
I have a trailer and is very pleased with it. Stay out approx 30-40 nights a year with the jimny and trailer plus the nights in my VW.
Going out is great, good luck with your Jimny adventure!

Top tents on rental Jimnys are common in Iceland. I don't know how the companies get around the weight limit.

I bought some roof bars from a charity shop for a tenner. Pictures here .
