GEN 3 with 117k kms, what should I look out for in the engine/transmission? was created by alpinejimny13
Hi everyone, first and foremost thank you for helping out with my tires! Unforunately due to the budget, I had to go with a chinese budget tire which has actually served me very well the last few months.
My jimny has just hit 117.000 kms and I was wondering what I should be on the lookout for regarding any parts that need to be changed or any consumables to change as well. I have some mechanical knowledge, I changed my manual locking hubs myself, but other than that I don't know much about mechanics. SO I come asking for some general help on what I should be changing/repairing soon! Any help is apreciated.
A bit more info, we bought this gen 3 2013 (with bonnet scoop) used with around 77.000 kms on it, its the normalĀ M13A engineĀ and tomorrow I'm going to do: Oil change, change the filters and also put in new spark plugs (nickel).

Coolant should be changed if it hasn't been.Ā You need to do it 3 times to get most of the old stuff out.
Crank pulley deteriorates with age and is worth changing, along with the drivebelts.Ā Might as well have a new radiator at the same time, since it needs to come out for access and they're not expensive.Ā Jimny cooling needs to be tip top.
Clean out the PCV valve and check you can only blow through it one way.
Check the oil levels in everything.Ā Buy new filler plugs (and washers) for the diffs as you may have trouble removing the old ones.Ā The proper 10mm plug key rarely fits in the plug due to rust.Ā Big molegrips are usually very effective.

Check the wiki section also where you can find the service intervals.
Some parts like brakes and belts and filters and consumables is wise to change and/or keep in stock if you are going on a long trip or have to rely on the car as your only means of transport.
As you live in the alpine hills also the brake fluid should be changed from time to time as brakes can get hot and deteriorate the fluid doing mountain passes.
But generally they do not break down so much so you get away with just the normal maintenence too.
And all parts are readily available.
I been all over Norway/Sweden/Denmark and haven't stocked up so much or done more than a oil change and regular or typical service before the trips.
But at home I try to keep a stock of general service items.
