Radio/Satnav not turning off!

Here's a new one.
I drove to work this morning, parked up, turned the ignition off and removed the key. The radio kept playing and satnav screen stayed on??

I tried putting the key back in and restarted the engine and turned it off again,  removed the key and the radio/display was still on. I got out of the car wondering if it would go off when I locked the car? The remote locking didn't work either, not even a flash of the hazards. So had to lock it with the key in the hole.

I will no doubt end up with a flat battery, the only thing I can think of so far is, that the ignition barrel is at fault and it thinks the key is still in and turned to the first position. But then again I don't remember the 'key still in' warning when I opened the door.

I will go back out when it's got a bit lighter, might try disconnecting the battery or just jump start when I leave work. Having said that, the radio has a 15 minute timer built in, to turn off.

Any thoughts or suggestions on what to check?

Just been out and it unlocked and locked with the remote as normal, radio has gone off as well. I didn't try putting the key in the ignition, thought I'd wait and see what happens at home time.

Hmm dunno. Does sound like it is linked with a switch and the ignition is most likely, unless you have a rodent? Is there a relay which isn't dropping out possibly?

Car started fine, no flat battery
Stopped off at Screwfix on the way home and same thing, left radio on and locked it with the key. Got home parked in the garage and everything went off and it locked with the remote.
So I am going for a dogdey ignition switch for now, i will investigate at the weekend.

Does anyone know of a suitable lubricant spray, that you can use on the ignition?

If it’s just the ignition key barrel which is sticking then Silicone or PTFE spray would be my choice. If you do spray something in hopefully it won’t find its way on to the contacts. Whenever I have done it on a car, I have tried spraying the key first, then turn it in the lock to spread the lube around, but if this doesn’t work a quick spray directly in the key slot is the only way.

If it’s the contacts which are sticking then Electrical Contact cleaner is about the only thing you can use as anything else will leave a film on the contacts.

My other non Jimny car stopped switching off the engine at various times up until about 2 years ago when it then refused to release the key. I thought it was the lock mechanism and was about to order a new lock barrel, which is both difficult to change and expensive when I saw a post that the switch contact module on the back can cause the problem. V. good news, the switch module was only about £10, but did involve lying on your back in the front footwell for an hour or so to release and do up the over-tight micro hex grub screws which held it in place.

Hopefully a bit of lube will fix yours.

Thanks, I have some Electrical Contact Cleaner spray (I think it says it lubricates as well?).
I will take the cowl off over the weekend an see how the barrel and switch unit are put together, hopefully it is just the electrical contacts.

Had my VW T5 in at a garage to fault find electrical problems with the AC, it is more like a neverending story that.
(Owning an "old" VW is not for the faint harted.)

But one of the first things the garage asked for was if I had my car rust treated with lanolin sheep fat. It appears that rodents like the stuff and prefer to chew on cars treated with the fat.
Havent heard this from anyone else though, might just be a one off and not a trend.

Do you have the service activated extended warranty?

@yakuza, mine had been treated with Dinatrol. So hopefully isn't a tasty treat for anything.

@300bhpton, good question, I think I am covered until January when my next service is due.

I'll try the contact spray this weekend and if it doesn't do anything, I'll contact my dealer.

Well, the ignition hasn't played up since, but I still had a look today.
There are three connectors on the ignition barrel, one at the 3 o'clock and 4 o'clock positions. And one right at the back of the barrel.

The connector at the 3 o'clock position is for the 'Key in ignition' warning. The one at 4 o'clock I don't know.

The one at the back of the barrel is the main switch, if you zoom in you should be able to see the label I've put on.

So for my issue I will be expecting the Dark Blue to stay live, if it plays up again.
