Gen 3 4wd switch/actuator fix

Hey everyone,

I've been chipping away at identifying the problem with my 4wd system (gen 3 push button) and finally made some progress.

Ive used the transmission operation guide and narrowed it down to a transfer box fault. Basically I'm getting the green light flashing 12 times with an audible click. Ive shorted the blue black wires and the hubs click in so seems that everything is working on that side.

I guess my question is how should I go about identifying and then fixing it? I have checked the wires and everything seems pretty solid. I must admit that I'm a little apprehensive to pull the actuator and switch off as I have zero experience with this sort of thing (gearboxes) and am unsure on where to start. Ive already spent good money on replacing vacuum components and would like to get to the bottom of it without wasting anymore.

Any logical guides/ comments are much appreciated.

Thank you kindly and have a great day.

Hey folks,
I ended up pulling off the actuator motor cover, its the round tin cover that hangs of the back end of the t-case. Inside I found that there was condensation and it was a little rusty. I left it off for a few days before I could get time enough to clean it up and put it back together by which time it had dried up. Just as a word of warning there are 2 springs inside which will fly out when you pull the armature out. If you are not patient and don't have small hands I would likely find someone else to do the job cause it is pretty fiddly getting it back together.

When I started up the vehicle it was in 4wd and from then on it has been working perfectly. I'm going to prioritise an oil change for the transfer case moving forward and hopefully this is the end of it.

Still not exactly sure what happened, maybe the armature was seized up or something but I hope that this helps somebody else who is having trouble.

Cheers,

the procedure for putting the case back together and dismantling too was to put in 4wd and getting the mark on the little cog wheel inside there behind the triangle shaped lid at the actuator to be in the correct position.
can be found in the trail gear manual for low gears and most likely in the service manual too.
